Max-Delbrück-Centrum Haus 10

Refurbishment and conversion of the former data centre into an open-plan office layout

The former data centre on the Berlin-Buch campus is being converted into an open-plan office space for the IT department of the Max Delbrück Centre.
The building’s defining feature is its exposed structural framework. This shapes the open space below and, thanks to its large spans, allows for a flexible floor plan. The lower nodes of the structural framework form the starting point of the concept. We have developed a shelving system whose uprights are clamped between the nodes and the floor. This system is also used to clad the integrated meeting pods. Shelving and pods create spatial zones that reflect the organisation of the working groups, demarcate circulation areas from workstations, and provide storage space and acoustic improvements.
Whilst the open-plan areas are realised using a restrained material and colour scheme, the booths are designed in monochrome with varying colours.
The aim of the design is to optimally combine the employees’ desire for a sense of security with the advantages of the open-plan office environment, both conceptually and in terms of design.
