Thielecksiedlung
Renovation of a listed residential building
The house forms part of the Thieleck Estate, a standardised housing estate dating from 1926, which was built in Berlin Dahlem for the upper middle class and civil servants of the Weimar Republic. The entire Thieleck Estate is listed as a historic monument. This means that not only the façades of the terraced and semi-detached houses are listed, but also all structural elements and interior spaces. In addition to the careful renovation and modernisation of the living spaces, we have converted the attic, which was previously used only partially for residential purposes, into a parents’ area. To this end, the roof, which was contaminated with harmful substances, was completely gutted. Only the timber structure was retained and integrated into the attic as a visible design element. The new rooms extend up to the roof ridge and are interconnected within a complex spatial geometry. Together with the clients, we opted for a very minimalist palette of colours and materials. The project is further distinguished by the selection of very high-quality materials and products.
